Venice & Croatian Coastal Cruise by Rail

Cruising Croatia’s spectacular coastline amongst archipelagos of islands and islets studded in the sparkling Adriatic is a simply magical experience. This fantastic holiday starts in style with rail journeys to northern Italy where we’ll explore Venice, the ‘Queen of the Adriatic’. Croatia beckons and our Captain is waiting to welcome us aboard for an unforgettable seven night adventure. By day you can relax and enjoy the hospitality of our crew before exploring towns bursting with old-world charm and island gems considered Croatia’s best-kept secrets. Evenings in port are perfect for dining ashore enjoying delicious Croatian cuisine and soaking up the local atmosphere.

Day 1: London – Turin
We journey aboard Eurostar from London to Paris, where we continue our journey by TGV to Turin in northern Italy. On arrival we’ll check-in to our hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 2: Turin – Venice Mestre
After a leisurely breakfast we’ll take the train to Venice Mestre for a two-night stay in the Hotel Venezia. The remainder of the day is at leisure for you to explore Venice Mestre, a mainland town connected to Venice by rail and bridges over the lagoon. A number of interesting and historic buildings can be seen around Piazza Ferretto, the town’s main square. They include the 18th century Chiesa di San Lorenzo, the town’s most important church, and Torre Civica, a restored clock tower that was originally part of the town’s medieval fortifications. You may choose to dine in one of the many cafes and restaurants around the Piazza.

Day 3: Venice
This morning we’ll take a short boat ride across the lagoon and meet our local guide for a walking tour of this extraordinary ‘floating’ city. Probably one of the most beautiful squares in the world, Piazza San Marco, or St Mark’s Square, is graced by the magnificent 11th century Byzantine Basilica di San Marco and Palazzo Ducale, the Doge’s Palace, which is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. At the centre of the Piazza, the Campanile di San Marco soars high above the city. We’ll also see the iconic Ponte di Rialto from where we can watch the famous gondolas as they glide on the Grand Canal. The afternoon is at leisure and there’s plenty to discover as you wander through Venice’s narrow streets and over the bridges that span the city’s characteristic canals.

Day 4: Venice Mestre – Opatija – Krk Island
Today we take the train from Venice Mestre to Trieste before transferring by coach to the Croatian coastal town of Opatija where we embark our yacht cruiser MV Amalia. Enjoy a welcome drink as we sail to Krk, the first of many Croatian gems we’ll visit as we cruise the Adriatic Sea. Krk is the largest island in Croatia known for its rugged coastline and hundreds of hidden bays. The evening is at leisure for you to go ashore and enjoy the many restaurants and bars along the waterfront.

Day 5: Krk Island – Rab Island
Today we cruise from Krk to Rab Island, known locally as the ‘island of love’. An optional guided excursion will show you numerous Gothic and Renaissance palaces, the churches and characteristic four belfries, and the beautiful narrow streets and medieval alleyways of the Old Town once encircled by ancient walls. You may like to walk to the viewpoint for wonderful views of Rab’s pocket-sized harbour. The evening is at leisure for you to enjoy Rab. Don’t forget to try ‘rapska torta’, the island’s famous, traditional cake.

Day 6: Rab Island – Zadar
As we cruise from Rab Island we’ll stop for a swim in the beautifully clear waters by tiny Maun Island before continuing to Zadar. The city on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast is known for its medieval churches, Roman and Venetian ruins, and our optional guided excursion will show you the highlights of its intriguing Old Town. An evening ashore is the chance for you to try one of the many great restaurants in the centre, or along the waterfront.

Day 7: Zadar – Molat or Olib islands
Hundreds of islands and islets make up the Zadar archipelago and today we’ll cruise north through this stunning landscape and stop at either Molat Island or Olib Island. Off-the-beaten track and with just small populations, both are equally charming. This evening you can relax on board before joining our Captain for dinner.

Day 8: Molat or Olib islands – Ilovik – Lošinj Island
After breakfast and a morning swim we’ll cruise between picturesque isles to the ‘island of flowers’, Ilovik. Surrounded by crystal clear waters this diminutive island, known for its wonderful natural bays, has a coastline of less than ten miles and just a few hundred inhabitants. After a brief stop, we’ll continue our cruise to the popular island of Lošinj. Here you can stroll along the pretty waterfront, or walk up to Lošinj Aromatic Garden, a small and charmingly rustic garden planted with herbs and indigenous plants. This evening you can dine ashore amidst picture-postcard surroundings.

Day 9: Lošinj Island – Cres Island
Long and narrow with olive groves, vineyards, and forests of oak and beech, the island of Cres and Mali Lošinj were, before the Romans dug a narrow channel to separate them, one island. After breakfast on board and perhaps a swim we’ll cruise to Cres Island. The Venetian Tower, Municipal Loggia and Church of St Mary, like much of charming Cres town, date from the 15th and 16th centuries when the island was under Venetian rule. An evening at leisure is your chance to explore the hidden squares and courtyards.

Day 10: Cres Island – Opatija
Today we’ll sail back to Opatija enjoying wonderful views of the famous Opatija Riviera, which is best seen from the sea. We’ll arrive late afternoon and you may choose to join an optional walking tour of the town, which in the 19th century was a fashionable resort for the higher strands of society. Alternatively, you can stroll along the delightful promenade that stretches to the fishing village of Volosko in one direction and the town of Lovran in the other. Not surprisingly seafood is popular in Opatija and for your final evening ashore there’s an excellent choice of restaurants serving Mediterranean and Baltic dishes.

Day 11: Opatija – Trieste – Turin
After breakfast we bid farewell to our Captain and crew before returning to Trieste for our train to Turin where we’ll check in to our hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 12: Turin – London
Today we take the TGV to Paris for our connecting Eurostar journey to London.
